Faces and Stories: A Portrait Collection
About
For my bachelor’s degree capstone project my classmates and I had free range over the choice of our assignment, as long as it showcased our skills from what we have learned over the past 4 years. Being here at NEIT I have come to love photography and creating layouts with typography, so for my project I decided to challenge myself with creating a book containing portraits that were shot within the my final term.
The Challenge
At first I really wanted to challenge myself with walking up to strangers and asking if I could take their picture. After the first few rejections my confidence was running low and time was slipping away. I had to have my pictures completely edited and laid out in a book format to have it printed towards the end of the term. Luckily for me, I still have many family members and friends that were kind enough to help me out.
The Solution
The final collection of images consisted of family members, friends, and people I met while taking photos. Some of the portraits are also accompanied with some extra photos to help tell a story. Through trial and error I was able to learn from the mistakes I was making taking portraits and improve on my skills throughout this assignment.
Taking portrait shots was new to me starting out this assignment but doing so I learned a lot more about photography than I did before. I was proud of the shots that I took and the assignment helped me gain some confidence back with my photos. Making someone feel comfortable in front of the camera is a huge step in the right direction. If you’re friendly and personable, anyone will be able to sit in front of your lens.
