Magical Dinosaur Bubble Gum
Background Information
In one of our first product design assignments our task as a class was to find an item that we believed had a bad package design. From there, we designed a new layout to help the product stand out more on the shelves. The product I chose was Magical Dinosaur Bubble Gum. I found it at the Dollar Store and knew immediately that the package needed some help.
About the Client
Magical Dinosaur Bubble Gum is a dinosaur egg shaped gum that is made by SophiePops. It can be found in stores like the Dollar Tree and competes against other candy companies in the north-east region. The bubble gum is marketed towards children and features a friendly dinosaur on the package as well as a multitude of colors that should catch someone’s attention.
Their Challenge
The colors of the package are not opaque enough to stand out which makes the product sink in and camouflage against the other competing candy. This causes the customer to look past the product resulting in a reduction of potential sales. The viewer can also see the nutrition facts through the front which necessarily is not a bad thing but it takes away from the design.
My Process
Approaching this challenge I had in mind that the design needed to be brighter but still have a fun and friendly feel to it. I also wanted to emphasize the name Magical Dinosaur and add that into the design of the package. When I think of the word magical my brain immediately goes to a magic wand and a hat. When I was sketching out some designs I thought these two object would be a great addition to add.
My Solution
My final design incorporates bright and friendly colors that will catch the eyes of consumers walking down the aisle. It will also be able to stand out against other competing candy packages and hold it’s own on the shelves.
The Timeline
The entire process lasted around 3 weeks because this was a quick assignment to get us started for the upcoming terms. In a world of competing products you have to design and react fast.
